In the first chapter of my Berlin-Journal I explain to what extent the city has changed since World War II – among others at administrative level. The city’s districts and neighborhoods are mentioned, and I also explain what does Stadtstaat mean, which Berlin is alongside Hamburg and Bremen. On a map of Germany, the reader will see where exactly Berlin and the other fifteen Bundesländer (federal states) are.
Tourism in Berlin
A part of this chapter is devoted to tourism, which has become the most important economic sector of the city.
Berlin’s cityscape is shaped by the milions of international visitors – especially in the Mitte district. Also the passenger volume at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and the number of overnight stays prove that Berlin is currently one of the most popular destinations in Europe.
