Catalonia has an enormous variety of natural and heritage landscapes. In the region Baix Empordà, which is located between the Mediterranean and the splendid massif of the Gavarres, the list of unmissable visits includes the monastery of Cruïlles. 1000 years of contemplation are waiting for you!
Medieval footprint in the Empordà
Located in the homonymous town, in the heart of the Empordanet region, the origins of the monastery are uncertain given that its founding act has not been found. However, other documents show that it already existed in 1035. Since then, of course, the monastery has gone through a lot: expansions and calamities, dark times, including epidemics and confiscations, and also glorious eras. What you see there today is the result of restoration work carried out in recent decades. Currently, the monastery can only be seen from the inside with a guided tour.
From the monastery you can see the town of Cruïlles, which rises on a gentle hill. The Romanesque tower of the old castle as well as the tower of the parish church of Santa Eulàlia stand out among the houses.
